Your support this Christmas will help keep Somali children in school

For the many children living under these conditions, going to school is no longer an option.

Trócaire has been working in Somalia since 1992. Our work is concentrated in the Gedo region of the country.

Given the difficulties faced simply to secure food, we provide basic supports such as healthcare, nutrition and education to large numbers. Our long-term commitment to Somalia has helped Trócaire become a trusted actor in this volatile country.

Right now we are supporting thousands of children to stay in education. We provide them with the materials they need – books, bags, basic sanitation materials – and ensure that they have access to safe drinking water.

School lunches are a critical incentive to keeping children in school, providing a reliable source of food and nutrition at this most uncertain time.

Abdi Mohammed of Trócaire Somalia says that: “Most of these children would probably be herding cattle, assisting in home chores such as fetching water, cooking and cleaning in their villages, but the school feeding program is now able to retain them in classes.

This is the only viable way to keep these children in school. Education is an equalizer in the society and these efforts will pay off in the future.”

This Christmas you can give a gift to help children stay in school in Somalia – and help them thrive there.

At €20, the Gift of Emergency School Lunches will give six children a lunch of maize and beans every school day for a month.
