Trócaire has welcomed today’s announcement by Irish Aid that it will provide €21m to fund the organisation’s work around the world. The announcement was made by the Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Colm Brophy TD, this afternoon.

Trócaire CEO Caoimhe de Barra thanked Irish Aid and Minister Brophy for their ongoing partnership:

“Trócaire’s partnership with Irish Aid delivers life-saving and life-changing programmes in some of the poorest and most vulnerable communities in the world. Through Irish Aid, Ireland is rightly regarded as a global leader in development and the protection of human rights.

“This funding will strengthen our work with communities facing the impacts of climate change, conflict and human rights abuses. Trócaire’s partnership with Irish Aid has changed millions of lives around the world. This new funding comes as Covid-19 threatens to reverse many gains made in recent years. Since 1999, the number of people living in extreme poverty worldwide has fallen by more than 1 billion people. However, for the first time in 20 years, world poverty is set to rise due to the Covid crisis. It is estimated that 120 million people have been forced into extreme poverty due to the virus.

“With Irish Aid’s support, Trócaire and our partners are working with communities around the world to tackle poverty, inequality and violence. We thank Minister Brophy and Irish Aid for their continued support and partnership.”
