Trócaire responding to floods in Kenya and Somalia

Trócaire is responding and will be providing food, water and other aid to 12,000 people over the coming weeks. 

The flooding has been caused by heavy rainfall across the country. This follows prolonged drought that left millions without food – a further sign of the weather extremes now facing people in the region. 

Approximately 100 people have died as a result of the floods. The flooding has also led to an outbreak of cholera. 

As well as the immediate risks to people, the flooding has also destroyed at least 22,000 acres of farmland and killed an estimated 20,000 animals. This will have a serious impact on food production over the coming months. 

Trócaire is providing emergency aid to some of the people affected. As well as food and water, we will provide mosquito nets to 1,000 families. 

The flooding has also affected parts of Somalia. Rivers were extremely low due to drought but have now burst their banks. The Juba River is at its highest level in 50 years. 

We are responding in Somalia by providing shelter, mosquito nets and clean water to over 10,000 people in affected areas. 

After being left on the verge of famine for much of 2017, this flooding is another serious humanitarian disaster for people in Somalia.
