Trócaire partner Caritas Morocco is responding to the devastating earthquake in Morocco that killed more than 2,800 people and left more than and 2,500 injured, according to Moroccan state media.
On Friday, September 8, a 6.8-magnitude quake, Morocco’s deadliest in more than six decades, struck in an isolated cluster of mountainous villages 45 miles south of Marrakech.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, many families have been forced to spend sleepless nights outdoors, fearing the possibility of aftershocks. Reports have emerged of entire villages reduced to rubble, with residents trapped beneath the debris.
Trócaire local partner Caritas Morocco, has started providing generators, clothes, first-aid kits, food, medicine and tents to people affected in the city of Amzmiz and its surroundings.
Amzmiz is located about 55 kilometers southwest of Marrakech, where some 20,000 people live. The earthquake caused extensive damage to the city and homes, with many people now sleeping in makeshift tents along the city’s street.
Cardinal López Romero, President of Caritas Morocco, said that aid is beginning to reach those in need as the number of those dead and injured continued to rise.
“We are discovering the real scale of this disaster,” Romero said. “What people need most now are generators, tents, clothes, medicine and food.”
Romero thanked the international community for their donations and asked for their continued support.
“I would like thank so many people who have shown their solidarity through donations and prayers. It will take months to rebuild these communities and I pray you will continue to support us.”
“As misfortunes never come alone, we have just learned of the situation in Libya. There too, more than 2,000 people have already died, not because of an earthquake, but because of floods, a storm, a tremendous storm. We do not want to be exclusive and we also ask everyone to show solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Libya.”
