The World Etc Podcast – Women of Gaza

The World Etc.’ is a collaboration between comedian Colm O’Regan and Trócaire. In each episode, Colm will speak with different guests about global issues. This month, Colm is joined in studio by:

  • Hala Riziq: A Palestinian resident in the Gaza Strip, working in development, gender-based violence (GBV), human rights and women’s rights.
  • Mona Al Shawa: The Director of the Women’s Rights Unit of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR).

During a rare trip away from their homeland, Mona and Hala speak about the challenging nature of their work.

Released to coincide with International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2019, this episode offers a reminder of the daily reality of living under a blockade that has left 2million people trapped in an area the size of County Louth with limited access to food, water & electricity.

“We should have a normal life, we should live with dignity,” said Mona. “As with everyone in this world, we have our dreams, we have our pain and we have our hope that we need to have a better life.

“The context of women in Gaza is totally different to the context of women in Ireland, but we also believe women are women wherever [they are] and we would like to share with them our experience as women working in this complicated situation under conflict.”
