‘The World Etc.’ is a collaboration between comedian Colm O’Regan and Trócaire. Each month Colm will speak with different guests about global issues. This month, Colm is joined in studio by:
- Sorcha Hamilton, an Irish Times journalist, who has recently started a series of ‘One Change’ columns, looking at positive, environmentally-friendly changes people can make in their day-to-day lives.
- Paula Butler, an environmental consultant for over 20 years, who has been on a personal crusade over the last two-and-half years to reduce the carbon footprint generated by herself and her family. She calls her initiative the “Ecoconscious Living Project”.
During their discussion, Colm and the panel discuss practical solutions to reducing personal waste, the dilemmas people face in trying to balance ethical consumer choices with convenience & cost and a low-cost consumer culture that has had a major environmental impact.

In keeping with how overwhelming many people find the topic of climate change, Colm also openly laments the passing of a ‘simpler’ time when he could look to ‘Captain Planet and the Planeteers’ for guidance! And while political considerations and the impact of unethical corporate practice are also touched on, this show very much focuses on the manageable, can-do changes people can make to inspire hope rather than despair.
