Learn moreOver 20,000 people in Ethiopia will receive life-saving emergency aid after Irish Aid today delivered 118 tonnes of aid to Trócaire.
Our team in Ethiopia received the aid – valued at €500,000 – today and will immediately begin distributing it to over 20,000 people who have been displaced by violence in the Moyale region. The aid is mostly made-up of shelter, kitchen sets and hygiene kits.
“A majority of the displaced are women and children and this support means that we can provide them with a roof over their heads and much-needed support,” said Teamrat Belai, Acting Country Director for Trócaire. “Our partnership is helping to ensure that the displaced persons receive the care and support that they urgently need.”
Patrick McManus, Head of Irish Aid in Ethiopia said, “Since 2012, Ireland has provided over €27 million in humanitarian assistance to Ethiopia, including over €6.8 million so far in 2018. This includes €4.5 million to the UN-managed Ethiopia Humanitarian Fund, €1 million to UNHCR to provide assistance to displaced people and refugees in the country, over €1.3m to our NGO partners on the ground.”
Inter-clan conflict has displaced close to one million people close to the Somali border.
