As we approach the close of 2023, we take a look back at a year of challenges and triumphs in the communities Trócaire works with through 12 compelling photos. Your support over the last year has been vital in making a difference in the lives of thousands of people.

To mark Trócaire’s 50th anniversary, leading climate and civil society space experts from across the globe attend Trócaire’s international conference ‘Local Power, Global Justice’. The engaging and interactive day at Dublin’s Royal College of Physicians, focused on Trócaire’s work to date and vision for the future. In Sierra Leone, with funding from Irish Aid, Trócaire and partners (Campaign for Good Governance, Association for the Wellbeing of Rural Communities and Development, Women’s Forum for Human Rights and Democracy, Social Enterprise Development, Network Movement for Justice and Development) have been campaigning for the passing of the Gender Equality Women’s Empowerment Act for the past four years and have worked closely with members of parliament to draft the law. The law was passed in November 2022 and states that 30 percent of candidates on party ballots must be women in local and national elections. Trócaire with partners also trained women to become empowered and know their political right. In May, 26 board, digital and card games - based on different themes including climate change, gender equality, refugee journeys and ocean pollution – made it through to the Trócaire Game Changers finals in the Helix Center in Dublin. Pictured here the Winners of the Primary Game Changers Award: students Fionn, Sam, Keeva, Molly, Lily, Anita, Ellie, Anne with their innovative, interactive boardgame ‘River Run’ which aims to raise awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Tommy Tiernan travelled to Malawi with Trócaire in September to highlight the urgent support the country needs to cope with the loss and damage inflicted by climate change. Tommy is pictured here with Rhoda Joseph, a member of Village Civil Protection Committee in Mchenge Village Malawi where land was damaged by Cyclone Freddy in March 2023. Trócaire’s Christmas appeal focused on children caught up in conflict in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Ukraine and Ethiopia. Yordanos, 15, was displaced by the conflict in Tigray, Ethiopia. She lives with her father Tesfay, 57 and her siblings in the Mekelle Health Centre IDP camp where they have received support from Trócaire partner Daughters of Charity. Photo: Trócaire.
