The Trócaire team at the Bloom festival in Dublin.

Are you passionate about global justice and human rights? Volunteering with Trócaire is an opportunity to make a positive difference to the world.

Trócaire tackles the root causes of poverty overseas. An important part of our work is raising awareness in Ireland. We want people in Ireland to care about global justice, but also to understand the factors that cause people to live in poverty.

We couldn’t do this without our amazing volunteers.

We have vibrant volunteer groups across Ireland. Our volunteers take part in a range of fun events to help Trócaire spread the word about what we do.

Volunteering with Trócaire is a chance to meet others who share your belief in global justice. You’ll learn more about the issues we work on and get a chance to spread that knowledge.

Volunteer Voices

Mary O’Sullivan

I was always interested in missionary work around the world, but I was busy working and rearing my family. Now Trócaire and its wonderful work fill a void left when my family grew up and I retired.

I recently attended Cork City Spectacular. Trócaire had an amazing exhibit on the plight of the indigenous people in Guatemala. I spoke to people about how Trócaire are supporting people to help themselves.

It feels so satisfying to be a small voice for people around the world. I would highly recommend being a volunteer for Trócaire. It is so fulfilling and personally rewarding.

I’ve had the opportunity to do so many different things with Trócaire. From hosting a refugee simulation for students, to sitting in the freezing sea at Dolymount Strand for a photo stunt. It’s always different, and always rewarding.

Trócaire trains its volunteers well. You always feel equipped for the challenge.

Speaking with school students is particularly rewarding. If you’re tired of cynicism, the remedy is to spend a morning in a primary school talking to kids. They are optimistic, fun and have boundless curiosity. Most importantly, they have a simple goodness which tired old adults can only envy.

Volunteering with Trócaire has been a revelation. It’s life-affirming to spend time with like-minded people. There are so many good things I could say about Trócaire and about the people who work there.

I have been involved with many different activities and campaigns over the last eight years. I have spoken in schools and parishes about Trócaire’s work, as well as at events such as the Balmoral Show and Bloom.

I attended Stormont numerous times with Trócaire campaigning for a Climate Bill in Northern Ireland. Recently I have been involved with Trócaire’s Business and Human Rights campaign. In October 2019 I took the boat and train to Geneva as part of a group of Trócaire volunteers attending the UN discussion on a Binding Treaty on Business and Human Rights. I hope to volunteer further with this campaign and continue to put pressure on politicians in Northern Ireland to take action protecting human rights and environmental defenders.

I would really recommend volunteering with Trócaire. The staff are very friendly and approachable and there are so many ways to get involved. I have learned so much in my time as a volunteer. I look forward to the next eight years.

Abosede Grace Ogunsanya

Having recently arrived in Galway with my husband and two young boys, I was looking to express my passion for social justice. So I applied to volunteer for Trócaire in early 2019.

As a volunteer in Trócaire, I have been involved in a range of campaigns and activities, including the annual Lent talk in parishes in Galway, school talks, the Bloom Festival, Galway Climate Strikes and the Trócaire hut at the Galway Christmas Market, among others. In particular, I enjoy the opportunity to engage with diverse people on campaigns highlighting the situation of vulnerable people in Africa and elsewhere.

Volunteering with Trócaire has been both rewarding and gratifying. Helping with administrative work in the Galway office gave me a sense of purpose. What I appreciate particularly about Trócaire is the fact that there is a space for everyone—indeed, despite joining while nursing a six-week old baby, Trócaire found a space for me to flower and fulfil my dream of advocating for social justice. It is an experience that is worth your time and there is dignity in being associated with such a noble organisation.
