Our leaders cannot ignore the numbers

There is massive support for the passing of the Fossil Fuel Divestment Bill which asks the government to withdraw its investments from the fossil fuel industry.

•    10,420 Trócaire supporters asked the Irish Government to withdraw its investments from the fossil fuel industry.
•    90 out of 143 TDs voted to pass the Fossil Fuel Divestment Bill on to Committee Stage.
•    More than 150 articles, with hundreds of thousands of views, were published in the national and international media following the vote at second stage in the Dáil.
•    Institutions with assets totalling €4,700,000,000,000 (yes that’s €4.7 trillion) have committed to divest from fossil fuels.
•    An Irish person emits almost 74 times more carbon than a Malawian.
•    # 1 state in the world to commit to divest once the Bill becomes law.

Ask Taoiseach Varadkar, Minister Donohoe & Minister Naughten to join the majority in the Dáil and support the Fossil Fuel Divestment Bill.

Dear Taoiseach Varadkar, Minister Donohoe & Minister Naughten

For many of us in Ireland the ‘future’ threat of climate change is becoming increasingly ‘present’. Events like Hurricane Ophelia, Storm Brian and recent flooding in Donegal will become increasingly the norm if current action on climate change is not significantly stepped up.

The impacts of climate change are already too much for many of the poorest women and men in countries where Trócaire works.

Ireland has rightfully earned global recognition for its enduring commitment to global poverty eradication. Lack of urgency in our domestic response to climate change is however increasingly undermining this reputation. We must plan for the long-term but action has to start now, not in another five years.

Let’s focus on what we can do now to address the climate crisis.

Passing the Fossil Fuel Divestment Bill into law is one such action, and the numbers are stacking up!

• Existing coal, oil and gas reserves contain 5 times more carbon than can be emitted if the temperature limits in the Paris Agreement are to be met.

• Institutions with assets totalling €4,700,000,000 (yes that’s €4.7 trillion) have committed to divest from fossil fuels.

• An Irish person emits almost 74 times more carbon per person than a person in Malawi.

• # 1 state in the world to commit to divest once the Bill becomes law. Taoiseach and Ministers, I am asking you to stand with the majority in the Dáil and support the Fossil Fuel Divestment Bill.

Yours sincerely
