Empowering Yirol East Communities through Village Saving and Loan Associations

Eleven years after independence and four years after the signing of the revitalized peace agreement, 9.4 million people are still in need of humanitarian assistance in 2023, a staggering 76 per cent of South Sudan’s population Communities face continued conflict, climatic shocks resulting in extraordinary flooding and localized drought, chronic food insecurity, inflation, high food prices and lack of access to basic services. Faced with deteriorating economic conditions, populations are less able to cope with shocks and increasingly rely on the humanitarian community for basic food and non-food assistance.
