The conflict in Syria has resulted in the worst humanitarian crisis in a generation. Syria and its neighbouring countries have been impacted, with nearly six million Syrian refugees outside the country.
With your support, Trócaire has been responding to the Syria crisis since the conflict began. We provide humanitarian aid in Syria and to Syrian refugees living in Lebanon. We have provided food, shelter, and basic household items.Trauma from the conflict is also a huge issue. We provide counselling and psychosocial support to affected families. We also support people with life skills and vocational training. This helps them to begin to rebuild their lives.
We also urge the EU and Ireland to do more. We need to welcome more refugees. We need to question why we have erected a wall against the hundreds of thousands fleeing this awful conflict.

More than 9 years after the outbreak of violent conflict in Syria, over 5 million Syrians are living as refugees in other countries. More than 6 million are displaced within Syria. As such, of a population of 22 million people, over half have been forced to flee their homes and half are in need of humanitarian assistance. Through the conflict more than 500,000 people have been killed. Almost 5 million children have been born in Syria in the last decade knowing only war.
The conflict has been horrific for women. Syrian women have been killed in direct combat, kidnapped, held for ransom, executed in mass killings, used as human shields, detained and tortured. They have been raped and sexually humiliated, and deprived of basic needs including medical care.
For over one million Syrian refugees living in Lebanon, daily reality is extremely challenging:
Given these dire conditions, many refugees want to return back to their homes in Syria. However for the majority it isn’t possible for these reasons:
There are no assurances of safety. There is no meaningful peace process, and there is no accountability for war crimes. Without these it will be very difficult for the 6million Syrians refugees to return home safely.
Our response to the Syria conflict is to protect human dignity within this humanitarian crisis. We provide humanitarian aid to Syrians including refugees living in Lebanon. We work through local partners to provide:
Protection services: such as psycho-social support, life-skills programmes, safe spaces, crafts, sports and community awareness sessions.
Resilience building support: such as skills development, engaging in decision-making, and establishing Community Resilience Preparedness Committees (CRPCs).
Basic needs assistance: such as food, shelter, and basic household items to refugees. We place an emphasis on reaching women and girls.
Our programme consists of timely, locally driven projects. These are designed in consultation with crisis-affected communities. Our programme meets internationally accepted standards in the humanitarian sector.
We commit to ensuring the mainstreaming of protection principles. This is to prioritise the safety and dignity of programme participants. We give meaningful access to assistance and services, and accountability to those we serve.
We promote participation and empowerment of those involved. We address the barriers women and girls face. We support the development of community and self-protection capacities.
