Known as ‘the land of a thousand hills’, Rwanda is one of the smallest and most densely populated countries in Africa.
The country is still rebuilding after a devastating genocide in 1994 left over one million people dead. While Rwanda is now a peaceful country, the trauma of the genocide of the Tutsi remains.
Despite economic progress, poverty remains widespread. Most people in Rwanda rely on farming to make a living. But climate change means they have to adapt how they farm.
Trócaire began working in Rwanda during the genocide. We have stayed ever since.
With your support, Trócaire is helping to build a brighter future for people in Rwanda. We help people earn better incomes and grow more food. We help women, men and young people become more resilient. We also help people overcome trauma and build a future of peace and hope.

Trócaire first started working in Rwanda in 1994, just after the genocide against the Tutsi people. Our work was initially purely humanitarian – delivering support to people who had been forced to flee their homes by violence.
We are committed to the long-term development of Rwanda. For the last two decades Trócaire has been working with the most vulnerable groups in the country to reduce poverty, promote reconciliation and support women.
We work in seven of the 30 districts in Rwanda: Nyaruguru, Nyamagabe, Nyagatare, Gakenke, Rulindo, Nyanza and Kirehe.
Trócaire began working in Rwanda in 1994 while the country was in the grip of crisis following the genocide. Working in partnership with local organisations, we help communities to generate income and food, while also strengthening the role of women in society. We also fund humanitarian programmes supporting refugees in the country.
