Overview
Nicaragua is a beautiful but troubled country in central America. The diverse landscape, wedged between the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, includes volcanoes, lakes and beaches with proud artistic traditions and people of wit and fortitude.
Despite steady economic growth in the last decade, Nicaragua is still one of the poorest countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Economic inequality remains high, while around half the rural population lives in poverty.
The country has been in the grips of a socioeconomic political crisis since 2018, which has deepened poverty and insecurity. The treatment of women is also a major challenge in Nicaragua. There are high levels of violence against women and girls. Nicaragua is also very vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters.
Thanks to your support, Trócaire helps families and communities in Nicaragua to drive meaningful change at a local level. This enables them to ensure children and the most vulnerable do not go hungry, have clean water and can tackle the root cause of discrimination and violence against women. Trócaire is also saving lives by supporting communities to prepare for and respond to disasters.
