The people of Myanmar are facing an unprecedented political, socioeconomic and humanitarian crisis with needs escalating dramatically since the military takeover and a severe COVID-19 third wave in 2021.
The expansion of armed conflict into and formation of new armed elements in new areas is driving increased displacement and has exacerbated or generated new protection and assistance needs.
The military takeover has heavily impacted the emerging economy and the already fragile public service sector, further restricting people’s access to essential services and children’s access to education. These inter-related risks have also deepened pre-existing needs among already vulnerable groups including stateless Rohingya people and people living in protracted displacement, predominantly in the country’s southwest and northeast.
In Myanmar, in 2022/23, Trócaire and our 25 local partners supported 62,000 people with humanitarian assistance, 9,000 women were supported to seek economic benefits for their families, and 18,000 people were assisted to access their land and realise their land rights.

Myanmar (formerly Burma) is a country in transition. Despite the economy opening up, it remains an incredibly unequal and divided society.
Armed forces often carry out forced labour, extortion and sexual violence against women in ethnic regions.
It is a large and diverse country with over 135 ethnic groups. Conflict has continued in border areas for over six decades. Within Myanmar there are over 240,000 displaced people currently living in camps.
Myanmar has made some steps towards democracy after decades of military rule and ethnic conflict. However, the opening up of the country has increased tension over the country’s natural resources. Ordinary people often lose their land and forests as business interests move in.
Women experience fewer rights than men. Traditional gender roles are very entrenched within society. It is rare for women to be in leadership roles within Myanmar. Despite years of campaigns, Myanmar remains without any legal framework for violence against women.
Climate change is another major challenge. Myanmar is one of the most vulnerable countries to natural disasters in South-East Asia. It has a high risk of cyclones, droughts, floods and earthquakes.
Trócaire’s programmes in Myanmar focus on: women’s empowerment, resource & land rights, peace building, governance, humanitarian response and emergency preparedness.
Trócaire works in partnership with 23 local partner organisations. We strengthen civil society and ensure respect for human rights in conflict settings.
Our work focuses on the border areas of Kachin, Shan, Kayah, Mon State as well as Tanitharyi Region. We have a country office in Yangon and a field office in Myitkyina, Kachin State.
Trócaire has been working with civil society organisations along the Thai-Myanmar border since 1995. Trócaire responded to Cyclone Nargis in 2008 and opened a country office in Myanmar in 2010. Our programmes now reach almost 100,000 people annually.
