You can keep people safe from COVID-19

All of our lives have been up-ended by the Coronavirus crisis. But nowhere is the fear of this virus more real than in the refugee camps of Lebanon, the crowded city slums of Nairobi or the war-torn villages of Somalia.

We are doing our best to keep each other safe in Ireland. Your support can also keep people safe in places least prepared to fight this virus.

The Coronavirus is present in every country Trócaire works in. Our teams are working hard to protect the poorest people in the world from this devastating virus.

Some examples of how Trócaire is responding to this crisis include:

  • In Somalia we run the only healthcare centres for over 200,000 people. We have set-up isolation wards, supplied our nurses and doctors with Personal Protective Equipment and secured oxygen supplies.
  • In Sierra Leone we are providing water and food to people quarantined.
  • In Lebanon we are providing soap to refugees to help them protect themselves from the virus.
  • In Syria we are supplying Personal Protective Equipment and soap.
  • In Honduras our radio ads are telling people how to halt the spread of the virus.

The number of infections is rising every day. Washing our hands and keeping social distance are the best preventions against this virus. But what if you have no running water? What if you live in a crowded slum where social distance is not possible?

What if you have no healthcare system to protect you?

The countries where we work lack the most basic resources to care for people with COVID-19.

  • Malawi has one intensive care (ICU) bed for every one million people.
  • Sierra Leone has no ICU beds.

South Sudan has two ventilators for 12 million people.

The coronavirus has called a once-in-a-century global crisis. We need a once-in-a-century global response.

Dr. Mike Ryan of the World Health Organisation has warned that the world cannot emerge from this crisis until the virus is defeated everywhere.

“None of us are safe until all of us are safe,” he said.

Please support Trócaire today to help us protect the most vulnerable people in the world from this crisis.
