Trade & Markets
We believe that fair trade is crucial.
Trade is one of the main drivers of global prosperity yet its benefits are not shared equally. The livelihoods of many have been undermined as a result.
We focus on agricultural trade rules as these are vital to providing a secure living for those we work with.
What we're doing
We work with some of the most vulnerable people in the developing world.
Helping people to make a living so that they can escape from poverty is one of the central themes of our work. Given the concentration of poor people in rural areas, rural development is a core element of our work.
Agriculture and the development of markets for trade at local level offers the potential to small farmers and rural communities to scale up from subsistence production. In order to survive small farmers have to participate in markets.
Our livelihoods work includes a broad range of activities from support for marketing of small producers products to policy and advocacy at the World Trade Organisation.
We lobby for developing countries to have the capacity to decide their agricultural policies and have effective access to developed country markets for their produce. But at a regional level, poor farmers also need improvements in transportation and help in marketing their produce so they can sell both locally and to neighbouring countries.
Wins
Trócaire has increased the capacity of our partner organisations to engage in trade policy discussions and hold decision makers accountable.
We have helped to strengthen the voice of developing countries in bilateral and multilateral trade negotiations.
