Campaigning for Change

Since its foundation in 1973, Trócaire has been tackling the causes as well as the effects of world poverty. Far too often the cause is man-made. A central aim of Trócaire’s is to spread an understanding among the Irish public of these injustices - the untold stories behind the headlines.
Working with communities world-wide has meant Trócaire listens to poor people’s concerns, and helps them develop the appropriate response to right the wrongs. Below are some of the examples that show why Trócaire’s response is desperately needed. Without the support of the Irish people, there may have been very different and more disastrous outcomes.
State violence in El Salvador
In 1977 Trócaire started funding the work of the El Salvador Human Rights Commission established by Archbishop Romero, who was tragically murdered the following year while saying Mass. His murder and the subsequent massive displacement of one and a half million people led Trócaire into a long and dangerous programme to help them.
Ogoni people in Nigeria
In 1998, Trócaire led a campaign that culminated in the successful release of 20 people from the Ogoni tribe in Nigeria who have been imprisoned during the political crisis that shook the country. On trial was the Ogoni people’s right to protect their ancestral land from exploitation by international oil companies. Trócaire’s work on mineral exploitation in Nigeria continues to this day.
Genocide in Guatemala
In 2003 Trócaire campaigned on the 20th anniversary of the genocide against indigenous peoples in Guatemala. We funded and promoted a campaign by CALDH, a local human rights organisation, that successfully prevented the military rulers at the time of the genocide being able to run for Presidential office 20 years on. CALDH recently supported victims of the genocide to finally have their day in court.
The challenge continues
Trócaire continues to work in Burma, Darfur, Colombia and Palestine- places where basic human rights are being denied. Trócaire also lobbies hard on critical issues like Climate Change, Trade and Overseas Aid- where our government has clear responsibilities and commitments to support the poor and vulnerable who are worst affected by global inequalities.
Our work is about change. A change of heart. Righting wrongs. A change for the better.
Join our community of change. Many others have.
“South Africans have had a long association with Trócaire who have not only been staunch opponents of apartheid but have supported projects within South Africa since 1977.” Nelson Mandela.
