Two years ago, Cyclone Nargis struck the southern coastal areas of Burma, leaving more than 140,000 dead and 2.5 million destitute.
Since the terrible night and day of May 2 and 3, 2008, grassroots groups have remained the main players in delivering aid and supporting communities to get back to a normal life.
Like in any major emergency, the rural people who survived the terrible onslaught of Nargis were the first to respond. They rescued untold numbers of family and neighbours and found ways to survive before outside help arrived.
