Dear Taoiseach and Minister Gormley,

Ireland has promised to provide €100 million as part of a ‘Fast Start Financing’ package to help developing countries respond to climate change.

Please make this a genuine commitment, by ensuring the money is additional to our commitment to spend 0.7% of GNP on overseas aid.  Ireland should not reduce the monies it gives to healthcare, education, gender, hunger and other vital programmes in developing countries so that it can meet its commitments on climate finance.

Vulnerable people in developing countries are already being seriously affected by climate change, a global problem they have done little to contribute to. Developed countries, including Ireland, bear a historical responsibility to tackle climate change and its impacts which have been caused by our excessive greenhouse gas emissions.

Our contribution to climate finance must be new and additional money and not taken from Ireland’s overseas aid commitments,

But the government is still playing hide and seek with this money. Will the money be taken from the overseas aid budget and given a different name? We want to make sure it is not!
