Dear Taoiseach

In 2000 world leaders promised to halve the number of people living in hunger by 2015. It’s a promise they are failing to keep. One in six people will go to bed hungry tonight – that’s one sixth of humanity. The number of hungry has passed the one billion mark for the first time in our history.

Taoiseach, at the UN MDG Review Summit in New York on 20th to 22nd September, I want you to include in Ireland’s action plan, four things which will contribute to a realistic and sustainable solution to the scandal of world hunger between now and 2015:

1.	We must put a clear plan in place for how we will meet our commitment to spend 0.7% of our GNP on overseas aid by 2015.

2.	We must ensure that the money we have committed to helping developing countries adapt to the impact of climate change is new and additional money to our overseas aid commitments.

3.	We must do more to voice our objections to International trade policies that disadvantage poor farmers across the developing world.

4.	We must ensure all hunger related initiatives are targeted towards women who are amongst the most marginalised people in the developing world.

A child dies every six seconds because of hunger. That’s five million children each year even though there is more than enough food available to feed everyone on the planet. You and other world leaders can change this. One in six of us depend on it.
