Trócaire helps people to take practical steps to overcome poverty and human rights abuses.
To bring about real change Trócaire works in close partnership with people in poor communities. They participate fully and identify the best way to tackle their problems. Our work has a substantial impact on many lives, helping people to develop food sources, achieve an education, earn an income or tackle the causes of poverty at government level.

Challenging Governments to Respect Human Rights

Last November I visited Trócaire's southern Africa office in Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique, to meet with some of the organisations Trócaire supports there. We drove an hour south of Maputo where I met with a farmers' group that was living on extremely unproductive land and struggled for many years to grow enough food.
The farmers explained that over the years their land had become dry and barren. They didn't have enough water to irrigate their land, which was infertile. They couldn't feed their families from the land. Their situation had become desperate....read on.
Rebuilding livelihoods in Liberia

The people of Liberia suffered greatly during the civil war that ended in 2003. Trócaire partner IRDO - Integrated Rural Development Organisation works to support people rebuilding their lives in remote communities.
Kpotolomah Village in Bong County is 16 kilometres off the closest highway. Access is very difficult and can only be gained by travelling over extremely rough dirt tracks. Local transport charges are expensive and the bad roads make it difficult for communities to transport their goods to market. .....read on.
