Copenhagen: tense and unclear

It is tense in the Bella centre. Heads of State arrived, and a series of speeches were made, including a bitterly disapointing one by US President Obama, who didn't inspire a single positive comment from anyone I spoke to. Whille Brazil's President Lula inspired by announcing new committments to finance their own emission reductions as well as provide support for other developing countries, President Obama's speech took a more defensive tone. Rumours abound, from the ever popular 'when do you think we'll get to go home - today? Tonight? 4am?

Copenhagen: today is the day

It has been a tense few days in the Bella Centre. In the negotiations, sessions have opened, closed instantly, and reconvened only to report no progress. There have been many disagreements over the process, including renewed anger on behalf of developing countries at the suggestion by the Danish President of the talks suggesting substituting the texts that parties have been working on with a text developed by the Presidency alone.

Copenhagen: half-way there?

It has been an extraordinary week in Copenhagen. From the controversy of the leaked draft of the Danish Prime Minister, to the suspension of the plenary sessions over processes and legal form, to the mass mobilization of up to 100,000 people on Saturday, it has been by parts inspiring, frustrating, bewildering, not to mention challenging.  On Saturday morning, listening to the intervention by Tuvalu at the reopening of the suspended session it was also incredibly moving – he reminded delegates ‘our very survival rests in your hands’.  After an intense week what has been achieved?

Copenhagen: Words and Action

European leaders have been meeting in Brussels for the last time before coming to Copenhagen next week. What they needed to do was inject some leadership and momentum into the talks here by firstly, agreeing to 40% emission reductions by 2020 or the very least stepping up to the 30% they had indicated they might, but have yet to do. Secondly by closing the loopholes that mean they can hide emissions, and thirdly, by clarifying that climate finance will be for the long term and will not be recycled aid commitments.

Copenhagen: heating up

It's amazing how quickly a place becomes familiar. The first day of navigating my way around the huge conference centre here in Copenhagen had felt like the first day at secondary school, wandering around, trying to figure out which way to the next session, swamped by hundreds (in this case thousands) of people milling in different directions.

Copenhagen: neither negotiable nor for sale

In the opening plenary session kicking off the Copenhagen talks developing countries gave a damning appraisal of industrialised countries’ approach to the last two years of negotiations.

Copenhagen: the stage is set

The stage is set for the conclusion of talks on a new international agreement on climate change. Walking into the conference centre here in Copenhagen on Saturday evening felt like a behind the scenes peek. The set is up, bright and clean before the crowds arrive.  This session has been highly anticipated. There has been two years of build up.  And now here we are, thousands and thousands of people are descending on Copehangen, celebrity Presidents are confirmed as star attractions. And it is all about to start…

UN conference on financial crisis

Expectations were high for the UN Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development which ended in New York on 26 June 2009. Civil society and Southern governments had fought hard last year in the UN Doha Conference on Financing for Development to ensure that the UN would play a part in world efforts to counter the impacts of the financial crisis on developing countries.

As the World's countries meet in New York to discuss a way out of the financial crisis, rich countries have blocked progressive reform of the financial system put forward by more than 130 poor countries.
