Hunger Task Force member Justin Kilcullen, Director of Trócaire, has welcomed the government’s endorsement today of the three main recommendations in the task force report, launched by the Irish government last September at the UN in New York.
“I welcome the fact that the government agreed to adopt the report’s three main recommendations dealing with agricultural productivity, tackling malnutrition and working to ensure that governments internationally keep their commitments to eradicating hunger,” said Mr Kilcullen. “The Task Force chairman, Mr Joe Walsh, emphasised that global hunger will not be dealt with unless governments intervene at the highest political levels.
Mr Kilcullen said the appointment of Mr Kevin Farrell as Special Envoy for Hunger showed the government’s willingness to deal with the problem. “The right to food is one of people’s most basic rights. Ireland is today demonstrating its commitment to wiping out the scourge of global hunger,” he commented.
