Freedom - €85.00 / £75.00

Freedom for slaves in Pakistan

Your gift of freedom will play an important part in freeing slaves in Pakistan.

Freedom! What a lovely gift for anyone to give or receive at Christmas time.

Although slavery is outlawed in Pakistan, the practice of bonded labour is still widespread in the agricultural, brick-making and mining sectors.

By choosing this gift you are ensuring the freedom of bonded labourers through legal aid.

You will also provide identity cards which will help former slaves to enrol in schools and access medical and social services.

How your gift will change people's lives

Abbas Ali (50) was unaware he was signing away his freedom when he borrowed €250 from his employer.

His wages for long days at a brick kiln were too tiny to raise his family, so his only option was to turn to the kiln owner.

Crippling interest meant that no matter how hard he worked he could not pay off the debt.

When Abbas’ son asked the kiln owner to settle the debt and protested about their inhumane work conditions, he was shot dead.

Abbas and his family fled and are seeking justice through the legal system with Trócaire’s support.

Trócaire has helped 5,000 people gain freedom from slavery since 2006. “This is the only experience in my life where I have seen efforts by other humans to bring justice” he says.
