Emily Otieno (54) from Nanyuki, Kenya has used Global Gift chickens to save lives.
Having been diagnosed with HIV after her husband’s death, Emily saw people dying because they were too afraid to get tested and treated.
She decided to speak out about her HIV status to break down stigma.
She set up a support group and Trócaire gave Emily Global Gift chickens which she used to set up five community chicken coops.
She uses the money from breeding chickens and selling eggs to give orphaned children food, run a junior school beside her home and provide skills training for adults.
“When I see someone who was ill getting up and eating food I say thank God,” she says. “I’m really, really thankful for what Global Gift did for me.”
