Ordinary civilians inside the Gaza strip have been subject to a horrific bombardment and an intense military offensive.

The death toll is enormous and the humanitarian crisis is vast.

The EU must use its leverage with Israel to get it to respect international law. The Irish and UK governments should press for Israel's trade privileges to be removed until it meets its obligations under international humanitarian law.

I am gravely concerned by the violence in the Gaza strip by both Israel and Hamas.  I believe that it is of paramount importance that civilians are given protection and that international law is upheld.

For too long Israel has had no incentive to respect international law.  The EU has considerable leverage because of the many trade privileges which Israel enjoys.

The Irish government has previously voiced concern around compliance with international law and I urge you to continue to express that concern by calling for Israel's trade privileges to be rescinded until such time as Israel complies with its obligations under international humanitarian law.  By pressing for this measure at a European level you can help illustrate to Israel that the EU has a strong value system which must be respected for cooperation to grow.

If Israel is not given such an incentive then we will never break the cycle of violence and the price will be the ongoing suffering of both ordinary Palestinians and Israelis.
