Sudan action

The Irish and UK governments can help the people of Sudan by asking that the existing 2005 peace agreement between the North and South of Sudan be put into action and by supporting new peace talks for Darfur.

Take action below by mailing the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Michael Martin TD or UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband MP.

Mr. Michael Martin,

For the men, women and children of Darfur, the last four years have been filled with conflict, violence and fear. An estimated 200,000 people have died and over 2 million have been displaced. For real peace to be achieved, an immediate ceasefire, an effective protection force and a long-term political resolution to the conflict are all needed.

I welcome the recent United Nations decision to send a UN/Africa Union combined force to Darfur. However, the crisis can only be fully resolved by a negotiated peace process. The Irish and UK governments can help the people of Sudan by:

- Insisting that the existing 2005 peace agreement between the North and South of Sudan is put into action.

- Using diplomacy and political pressure to support planned new peace talks on Darfur that include all those involved.

I look forward to your reply.
