Poznan Climate Change conference: fire and ice - by Alice Mary Higgins
06-12-2008
I arrived into Poznan this Saturday evening to a market square filled with melting ice sculptures - an almost comically vivid reminder of the crisis the world is here to address.
Yet it seems that glaciers themselves move ever faster then some of the political decision makers here at the COP14. As the conference reaches its half way mark there is a palpable sense of frustration, notably with the EU whose reluctance to put anything on table is limiting both the discussion and progress that is so badly needed.
Yet even as time is slipping by, the pressure from civil society is growing, there is genuine passion here along with heated discussion and a determination to see movement in the week to come.
Today was the Global Day of Action and while bells were ringing in Belfast, Dublin and across Ireland, the streets of Poznan were filled with clocks, planets, flowers, animals and every kind of banner and placard - all sending a clear message to delegates - the world demands real talk and real action!
Taking part in today's march were many of Trocaire's partner organisation''s from Europe and around the world. Tommorow, as part of an extraordinary and historic collaboration between the CIDSE and Caritas Internationalis networks, we will be launching our shared call for Climate Justice...
