Theme: Children’s Rights

The theme that runs through this resource is that of Children's Rights. The material examines Children’s Rights using the case study of Nicaragua. Human Rights and social responsibilities underpin the central concepts in the curricula subjects of Citizenship in Northern Ireland and CSPE in the Republic.

In this booklet we profile Katia and her friends who work in the market selling fruits, vegetables and other goods.  These Nicaraguan children work from an early age to contribute to the family income.  The resource contains background information, activities on the Convention of the Rights of the Child, worksheets and a class liturgy.

Included in this resource are stories of children from Nicaragua, detailing what their daily lives are like and how they are involved in work which supports their families.  It is hoped that through completing the activities pupils will begin to appreciate the diversity which exists in our world.
