Dear Minister

I am writing to you in relation to the Public Consultation on National Climate Policy Development.

I am happy to see this public consultation taking place. While the online survey in my view is overly technical, I feel very strongly about this issue and I want to take this opportunity to share my views on climate legislation for Ireland.  Please accept this as my submission to the public consultation.

The climate crisis is among the greatest challenges we face as a global community, posing life threatening risks to those in developing countries who have done least to cause the problem.  Ireland’s emissions of the greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change are far too high for our population size.  Ireland has a responsibility to its own people and to people in developing countries who are already feeling the impacts of climate change.

Tackling climate change also presents us with an opportunity in Ireland to rethink and reinvigorate our economy and society and become truly sustainable. Enacting a strong climate law is a signal to the international community that Ireland is ready to walk the walk, not just talk the talk on climate action.

A strong climate law should include:

- targets that are met domestically without buying offsets overseas.
- legally-binding 5-year targets in the form of carbon budgets, to put Ireland on the path to reduce our emissions by at least 80% by 2050.
- an independent expert advisory body to advise Government, with the power to publish its own reports.

Any climate policy plan should also ensure that developing countries receive additional, appropriate and adequate financial support to survive the impacts of climate change.

Minister, I would very much appreciate it if my views could be taken into account on this vital issue.

Let’s stop contributing to the problem, let’s start implementing the solutions.

The Government now wants to hear what we think about climate legislation in their Public Consultation on Climate Change Policy.
