The enormous personal sacrifices made by Aung San Suu Kyi during her long struggle for justice should never be forgotten.
As she makes her historic visit to Ireland, people here can be proud that throughout this struggle they have supported attempts to bring about a fair and just society in Myanmar.
Photos below Aung San Suu Kyi are from a Burmese Refugee camp on the Thai border by Hu O'Reilly.
Irish people have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Myanmar in their demand for human rights and dignity. For many years the people of Myanmar were cut off from the outside world, but throughout this time they knew that the people of Ireland were supporting them.
This was a huge source of encouragement for people working for justice in Myanmar and it is something we in Ireland should feel very proud about.
Much of this support was channelled through Trócaire. We have been supporting local organisations in Myanmar since 1995 and are today the only Irish NGO working in the country.
Aung San Suu Kyi is a symbol of hope, not just for the people of Myanmar but for hundreds of millions of people around the world.
The fact that she has chosen to come to Ireland is symbolic of the relationship between our two countries.
We should take inspiration from her and show the same determination to bring justice to hundreds of millions of people struggling for justice around the world.
